The Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service and tax officials from nine states plan to announce the details of a new agreement between state and federal tax officials to fight abusive tax avoidance schemes. The announcement has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 16 at a news conference to be hosted at the Treasury Department.

Treasury says abusive transactions to avoid taxes, according to private estimates, deprive state and federal governments of billions of dollars annually.

Expected to announce the new agreement will be IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson, Treasury Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy Pamela F. Olson, IRS Small Business/Self-Employed Division Commissioner Dale F. Hart, a representative of the Federation of Tax Administrators as well as officials from California, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
